How to Get Your Website Featured on ChatGPT: Beyond Traditional SEO

I’m sure you’ve noticed LLM-based chatbots like ChatGPT are evolving to be the next generation of search engines. Chances are this will only be something that grows in prowess in the coming years, something we are already witnessing unfolding in real time.

If you have yet to use chat for local searches or to find “best of” lists, then you are underutilizing it’s capabilities. Think of it like a search engine without the noise. And you can even tell it how to respond – Want a concise answer? No problem, just let it know in advance when submitting your query.  

You are already familiar with Google, but you probably don’t think about how it sources information for search queries by crawling and indexing billions of web pages across the internet. It uses algorithms to analyze and rank these pages based on relevance, quality, and user experience factors. When a user submits a query, Google quickly searches its index and presents results most likely to satisfy the user’s intent, prioritizing well-structured, authoritative content.

But did you ever wonder where and how chatbots ChatGPT gets this information from?

How Do Chatbots Source Information?

Chatbots like ChatGPT and Claude draw from a diverse range of text sources—books, articles, and publicly available content—to generate responses.

For example, using Chat to find the best rehabs in Los Angeles will provide a list of treatment centers relevant to your query. But how does it determine which ones to show?

Chatbots like ChatGPT can access real-time browsing tools to pull current and relevant data from the internet when responding to questions about specific topics like rehab centers in Los Angeles. This feature enables them to go beyond static knowledge, providing you with the most up-to-date information. It’s akin to consulting a live reference library, ensuring timely and accurate responses.

It doesn’t just tap into Google for those results. Google has its proprietary formula for populating results, but chatbots are a separate beast.

So, how do you find out how to appear in results on ChatGPT?

I’ll walk you through the two main steps I took and share the results.

First Step: Using the ChatGPT conversation input box, a.k.a “text input field,” type your query. For this example, I typed “best detox treatment center Los Angeles.”

It provided a list of four different facilities, touting any specifics about each.  

Second Step: Ask Chat how it arrived at those results. Its first response was to say the list was gathered from reputable sources but simply listed the facility websites themselves as those sources.  

When I inquired further, it revealed the sites were selected based on the following:

Chat selected the top detox treatment centers in Los Angeles based on several criteria:

  1. Reputation and Credibility: The chosen sources are recognized for their credibility in the addiction treatment field. These centers have established reputations and are frequently cited in various reliable resources.

  2. Comprehensive Information: The selected sources provided detailed and specific information about the services offered, such as medical detox, dual diagnosis treatment, and holistic therapies. This level of detail helps understand the full scope of treatment options available at each facility.

  3. Accreditation and Certification: These facilities are accredited by reputable organizations, which indicates a standard of quality and professionalism in their treatment programs.

  4. Patient-Centered Care: The descriptions emphasized personalized and compassionate care, which is crucial for effective addiction treatment. These treatment centers highlight their individualized treatment plans and comprehensive support systems, making them notable choices.

  5. Diverse Treatment Options: The centers listed offer a range of services, including various types of therapy and aftercare support, catering to different needs and preferences.

You might be thinking – Well, doesn’t Chat hallucinate?  Absolutely, but that’s a separate article for a different day.  Today we are directing our focus on necessary steps at bare minimum to increase the likelihood your website shows up when Chat searches.

Understanding the Variation in ChatGPT Query Results

What if your treatment center already meets these criteria but is not showing up in the results?

If your treatment center is not showing up in the chatbot results, I’ve summarized provisional considerations below. To get your substance abuse rehab center considered for inclusion on a list of top detox treatment centers, you can follow these steps:

  1. Ensure Comprehensive Online Presence:
    • Website: Make sure your website is professional, easy to navigate, and includes detailed information about the services you offer, including types of therapy, accreditation, and staff qualifications.

  2. Accreditations and Certifications:
    • Ensure your facility has relevant accreditations, such as from the Joint Commission or CARF, as these are indicators of quality care.

    • Encourage satisfied clients to leave positive reviews on platforms like Google, Yelp, and industry-specific sites. Strong testimonials can significantly impact your reputation.

Out of curiosity, I performed another search, this time for “detox treatment center Los Angeles.” As expected, it yielded different results, this time listing five facilities instead of four.  

When asked about why the results were different, Chat provided the following response:

The difference between the two lists of detox treatment centers in Los Angeles is due to the use of different sources and selection criteria. The first list provided was based on a directory and resource website for the addiction treatment space. This website featured centers such as those listed in the results Chat showed in response to my query, highlighting specific facilities known for their comprehensive care, evidence-based practices, and supportive environments.

The second list included centers that, upon further review, didn’t seem to be distinguishably different. This next list was based on information from sources such as MentalHealthProviders.org. These sources emphasized additional facilities with notable accreditations, client testimonials, and specific services.

Different sources may emphasize different aspects of treatment centers, such as their specialized programs, client experiences, or specific treatments offered. Additionally, the selection criteria and rankings can vary, leading to differences in the centers highlighted in each list. This variation ensures a broader view of available options and helps potential clients find the best fit for their needs.

It’s clear to me that Chat is still ironing out how they fetch relevant results and that more revelations into it’s inner workings will come with time.

The key here is to ensure you don’t fall behind any more than you might already be. The chatbot and AI personal assistant are clearly here to stay.

What Can I Do to Get My Detox Treatment Center on ChatGPT?

To get your treatment center featured in search results like those discussed, focus on a few key strategies:

  1. Develop a Comprehensive Online Presence: Ensure your website is professional, detailed, and easy to navigate. Include information about the services you offer, your team’s credentials, and patient testimonials. This transparency builds trust and makes it easier for potential clients to understand your offerings.
